What the 2026–27 Federal Budget Means for Eyecare Across Australia

The 2026–27 Federal Budget didn’t bring sweeping changes to eyecare, but it did deliver a few important decisions that will influence how Australians access vision services over the next year.

For many people, the biggest question is simple: “What does this mean for my eye health?”

At Optical Superstore, our focus remains the same as always — making quality eyecare accessible, affordable, and easy to understand. Here’s what the Budget means for Australians, and how we’ll continue supporting your vision every step of the way.

Protecting Access to Sight Saving Retinal Care

The Government has reversed its earlier plan to reclassify intravitreal injections — a treatment used for conditions like macular degeneration — into a category that would have increased patient costs. This means Australians who rely on these injections won’t face sudden price hikes or reduced access.

While this is a welcome decision, many people in regional and rural areas still struggle to access timely retinal care. Optometry Australia continues to advocate for smarter, more flexible models of care to help close this gap.

How Optical Superstore Supports You

We don’t perform intravitreal injections, but independent optometrists co-located in our stores play a crucial role in:

  • detecting retinal changes early
  • monitoring ongoing eye health
  • providing timely referrals
  • supporting long‑term management

Early detection is one of the strongest tools we have in preventing avoidable vision loss, and that’s where the tenant optometrists shine.

Veterans’ Optical Benefits Remain Secure

The Budget introduced new limits for some allied health services for veterans, but optometry was intentionally excluded. This means veterans will continue to receive funded glasses and visual aids without competing for capped resources.

Our Commitment to Veterans

Optical Superstore has proudly supported veterans for decades via the D.V.A. scheme. This decision ensures we can continue providing:

  • affordable prescription eyewear
  • comprehensive eye examinations by tenant optometrists
  • a wide range of visual aids (or referrals to Government-endorsed service providers for such)

We’re here to make sure every veteran receives the care and respect they deserve.

What This Means for OSS and Tenant Optometrists

Our model already supports tenant optometrists with:

  • stable, well‑equipped consulting rooms
  • strong administrative support
  • access to high‑quality optical products
  • a consistent flow of patients

Budget measures that strengthen small‑business resilience help keep the entire eyecare ecosystem healthy, and that’s good news for patients everywhere.

Looking Ahead: A Stable Year with Room for Improvement

While the Budget didn’t deliver the major reforms many in the sector were hoping for, it does provide stability in key areas. Optometry Australia will continue advocating for improvements in access and affordability, and for the expanded scope of practice, especially in areas where optometrists can help reduce pressure on specialist services.

Optical Superstore’s Ongoing Role

We remain committed to:

  • Affordable, accessible eye examinations
  • Clear, practical advice for families of all ages
  • Evidence‑based care for conditions like myopia, glaucoma, and macular disease
  • Supporting communities across metropolitan and regional Australia

No matter what changes come through future Budgets, our priority is — and always will be — helping Australians see clearly and comfortably.
