Women in Science: A Clearer Vision

Throughout history, women have made groundbreaking contributions to the optical industry, shaping the way we see the world—literally.

Patricia Bath, a pioneering ophthalmologist, revolutionised eye care with her invention of laser cataract surgery device and procedures known as laserphaco, and the development of a new discipline in ophthalmology: “community ophthalmology”, now operative worldwide.

In the world of eyewear design, visionaries like Miuccia Prada and Vera Wang have redefined the intersection of fashion and function. Their achievements serve as powerful reminders that science, technology, and innovation flourish when women are part of the equation.

On February 11th, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the achievements of women in scientific fields and encourage the next generation to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

At Optical Superstore, we are committed to promoting gender equality in the optical industry and inspiring young women to consider careers down such pathways as optometry, optical dispensing, orthoptics, and optical mechanics.

The Importance of Gender Diversity in the Optical Industry

Gender diversity in the optical industry fosters innovation and enhances patient care. However, women remain underrepresented in specific roles within this field. For instance, only 17.4% of ophthalmologists and 32.9% of optical mechanics in Australia are female*.

Exploring Career Paths in Optics

What occupations, roles, and jobs are available with the optical industry? Here is a short list of several roles—some you may have heard of and others that may be new to you.

Optometry: Optometrists are primary eye care professionals who perform eye examinations, diagnose vision problems, and prescribe corrective lenses. This rewarding career combines patient interaction with the application of scientific knowledge.

Optical Dispensing: Optical dispensers work closely with patients and customers in optometry practices, fitting and supplying prescription spectacles, sunglasses, and contact lenses. They play a crucial role in helping individuals achieve optimal vision and comfort and are often the first point of contact in a successful optometry and eyewear practice.

Orthoptics: Orthoptists specialise in diagnosing and managing eye movement disorders and binocular vision problems. Working in cooperation with specialists, they support both children and adults in improving visual function through non-surgical methods.

Optical Mechanics: Optical mechanics are skilled technicians who manufacture and repair optical devices, including lenses and frames. Their precision work ensures the quality and functionality of eyewear. Optical Mechanics produce prescription lenses to exacting standards in optical laboratories worldwide. This career path offers an exciting opportunity to combine fashion, function, mathematics, and technology to deliver solutions for vision problems every day!

Encouraging the Next Generation

Mentorship, educational opportunities, and positive role models are essential to inspiring more women and girls to pursue careers in the optical industry. By highlighting the contributions of women in optics and offering support, we can work towards a more inclusive and diverse future in eye care.

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let’s celebrate the achievements of women in the optical industry and encourage young women to explore the exciting and impactful careers that await them in this field.
