On Sunday March 2nd, 2025, the nation’s largest community-based environmental event celebrates 35 years of making our country a cleaner, greener place to live. The annual Clean Up Australia Day encourages our community to take responsibility for their neighbourhoods by removing rubbish and restoring the local environment to its unmarred beauty.

In 1990, Ian Kiernan AO gathered his friends and his community, including co-founder Kim McKay AO, and brought the first Clean Up Australia Day to life. The initiative was inspired by his passion for sailing, and the appalling amount of rubbish and pollution he encountered as he travelled the oceans.
The event was a great success, sparking national interest as people became greatly enthusiastic to make a tangible difference in their local communities. In the past three decades, over 22 million Aussies have participated in Clean Up Australia events, donating 38.5 million hours of dedicated volunteer work for the benefit of our environment.
