Can my eye test be bulk billed?

Yes, optometrists bulk bill most appointments to Medicare. This means there is no out of pocket expense to you for most eye appointments. Health insurance is not an essential requirement to see an optometrist located at Optical Superstore.

Optometrists consulting at Optical Superstore premises offer bulk billed eye tests for most appointment types. This means Medicare will cover a comprehensive eye test every 3 years if you are below the age of 65 and every year if you are 65 or over.

Optometrists not only test your vision and prescribe glasses or contact lenses, but also assess the health of your eyes. Some eye conditions are treated or monitored by an optometrist, while other times a referral to an ophthalmologist is required.

Some eye conditions do not have early symptoms and you may not suspect them without the use of specialised optometrist equipment. However, if you do notice changes in your vision, pain or discomfort, blurred vision, seeing double, floaters, flashes, spots or specs in your vision or any other changes to your eyes, book an appointment immediately. Sometimes, a quick diagnosis is critical in maintaining the health of your eyes.

Please bring your Medicare card to your appointment. If you are a new patient, remember to come 10 minutes early to fill out the new patient record card information. During busy times of the year, such as school holidays and Christmas, leave enough time to find a car park before your appointment as optometrists need adequate time to dedicate to your eye test.

can I book an eye test without medicare?

Yes, if you do not have a Medicare card, you can still book an eye test. The cost of a consultation with an optometrist may vary depending on the consultation type. Please call or visit your nearest store for more information.

Note: Optometrists co-located in Optical Superstore locations are independent practitioners conducting their own optometry businesses.
