DIGITAL RETINAL IMAGING AND Optical Coherence Tomography
During an eye examination, your optometrist uses various techniques and equipment to examine the health of your eyes, assessing the internal structures including the retina and optic nerve.
Digital Retinal Imaging
Digital retinal imaging involves capturing high-resolution images of the back of your eye, including the retina, optic nerve, capillaries, and blood vessels.
These images map the internal structures of your eyes and mean the optometrist is able to identify eye conditions from very early stages. Images give detailed information about your eyes which can be saved and compared to at future appointments to assess the progression of eye conditions.
You can request copies of the images if you would like a comprehensive record of the history of your eyes.
Optical Coherence Tomography
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that produces cross-sectional retina images, similar to an ultrasound but using light waves. This produces contour maps of your macula and retina in each eye.
OCT allows your optometrist to assess the layers of the retina in detail, helping to diagnose and monitor conditions such as macular holes, retinal detachments, and diabetic macular oedema. This technology is relatively new and has increased the diagnosing capabilities in optometry.
The importance of Digital Retinal Imaging and OCT
Optometrists may suggest digital retinal imaging and OCT as a follow-up assessment to provide you with the best possible eye care.
These additional assessments are crucial for the early detection of eye diseases, especially those that may not present symptoms in their initial stages. By monitoring changes in your eye structures over time, optometrists can intervene early and prevent vision loss.
How much is Digital Retinal Imaging or an OCT? These additional services may incur a fee since Medicare does not cover them. Your optometrist will discuss the benefits of the tests and any costs before undertaking these assessments.
