WHAT’S THE SITUATION IN WEST PAPUA?

In 1969, a United Nations vote for the inclusion of West Papua into the Republic of Indonesia saw the participation of only a small fraction of the population – a mere 1026 people to represent approximately 800,000 – controversially selected by the Indonesian military. With votes cast under threats of violence, the often-termed ‘Act of No Choice’ unsurprisingly saw a unanimous agreement for Indonesian control.

Still today, journalists and human rights monitors are prohibited from entering the region, resulting in a lack of awareness among the Australian population regarding the situation of a region so nearby. 

Under militia control, West Papua faces regular civil and armed conflict, unjust court trials, and a shocking number of internally displaced citizens. Limiting international media access means bringing attention to the frequent human rights abuses within West Papua is a monumental task and preventing these violations harder still.

The Optical Superstore’s co-owner Ian Melrose is a vocal advocate for media access and ultimately self-determination in West Papua. Through relentless campaigning, often in the form of bold television advertising, he seeks to reach into the loungerooms of everyday Australians who may be oblivious to the plights of West Papuans and generate much-needed awareness. This includes commissioning a 2006 Newspoll which showed more than 3/4 of Australians in favour of West Papuan independence.  He views these efforts as a natural extension of pre-existing work in support of East Timor which has also suffered at the hands of both the Indonesian and Australian governments.

EAST TIMOR

Ian was driven to activism in 2004, motivated initially to campaign on behalf of East Timor after reading an article about a young girl dying from an easily preventable illness.

He immediately put significant funding towards an extensive advertising campaign for the rights of East Timorese to their own gas and oil resources, which were being stolen by the Australian Government. Ian’s goal was to bring the issue out of obscurity, shining a nation-wide spotlight on the absurdity of the richest nation in our region – Australia – taking indifferently from one of the poorest.

For almost two decades, The Optical Superstore has financially supported HIAM Health, a Malnutrition Rehabilitation and Education Centre focused on the health and wellbeing of East Timorese families. Through education and employment, the initiative hopes to close the enormous gap in life expectancy and opportunity between our country and that of our close neighbours in East Timor.

THE FILM FESTIVAL

Across Wollongong, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Lismore, Hobart, Melbourne, and Darwin, the West Papua Film festival has travelled the country this April, spreading awareness about the injustices occurring right on our doorstep.
The series of short documentaries include topics as broad as football and hip-hop in the context of life under a foreign occupying force. Stories of resistance and perseverance, struggles for social justice, and the fight against large-scale environmental destruction.

This incredible collaboration of activist groups with West Papuan, Indonesian, and Australian filmmakers hopes to “promote peace, justice, and education, and the prevention of harm to the thousands of internally displaced persons and refugees in West Papua.”

Since media is barred from entry to West Papua, the conditions of life and authentic stories of West Papuans rarely have a chance to leave the country. This film festival offers a unique opportunity to gain a new and important perspective unlikely to be found anywhere else.

Question 2: How Do Multifocal Contact Lenses Work?

These lenses incorporate zones for near, intermediate, and distance vision, similar to progressive eyeglasses. However, a multifocal contact lens layout differs somewhat compared to multifocal glasses. How?

3 Designs of Multifocal Contact Lenses

Here are the three variations in the design of multifocal contact lenses:

• Concentric: This design features a central zone of distance vision prescription. Positioned around this zone is a ‘ring’ of stronger power, giving the wearer a near vision zone. These zones often alternate, offering multiple rings of each power.
• Progressive/Aspheric: This design starts with the central zone for distance and changes gradually outwards, blending an intermediate power and a reading zone furthest from the centre.
• Segmented/bifocal: Often described as a bifocal contact lens design (for simplicity), a segmented lens has a stronger addition occupying one-half (or close to it) of the lens. A segmented contact lens design is produced by incorporating a prism into the lens design. The beauty of this lens design is that the lens will swing around so the prism sits at the bottom of the lens (ensuring your reading area is naturally positioned).

The variations of design aren’t available across all brands of multifocal contact lenses; however, finding out which design (modality is the formal term we use for contact lens types) suits the wearer is all part of a “teach & fit” consultation—a component of your contact lens/eye examination appointment.

Question 3: Are Multifocal Contact Lenses Better Than My Multifocal Glasses?

The answer here largely depends on whether (as a current multifocal glasses wearer) your multifocal glasses need to be doing something better for you visually.

• Regularly clean your microfiber cloth with mild detergent to prevent dirt from transferring to your glasses. Can I wash a microfiber cloth? YES! Just don’t use a product that has a fabric softener element. This will leave buildup within the fine loops of thread and make the cloth your #1 problem. If in doubt–chuck it out. What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s corneal lens, and it’s responsible for focusing light onto the retina. As we age, lens proteins can clump together and become cloudy, consequently losing their transparency. This build-up causes blurred or distorted vision. The flow-on results from the inability for light to pass neatly through the front lens of the eye lead to some pretty immediate vision issues:

• Difficulty seeing details at night.
• Increased sensitivity to light.
• Visual aura (such as seeing halos around lights).

1—Winter: This The Season To Be Freezin’

Winter and the colder weather we immediately associate with it bring lower humidity levels, leading to a decrease in moisture in the air. Not only does this dramatically affect what we call the “feels like” temperature on overcast days or windy, unsettled weekends, but low humidity significantly impacts your vision, comfort and eye health.

How?

This dry environment can cause the eyes to become dry and irritated. Some who experience this on an acute level may find that dry eye symptoms lead to symptoms such as itching, burning, redness, and a gritty sensation. In addition, dry eye syndrome can be exacerbated in cold climates, as both indoor heating systems and cold winds outdoors contribute to increased evaporation of tears from the eye surface.

How, then, does this impact contact lens wearers?

Dry eyes (due to low humidity as a seasonal cause) and regular contact lens wear can make for a painful combination. Therefore, your fresh pair of contact lenses can dry out quickly. If you’re in the habit of maximising your contact lenses’ wear time, you’re likely trying to get 8-10 hours out of a pair–at a minimum! What, though, can you do if you are six hours in and feeling the burn?
